UK Fungus Day 2019 – your guide to what’s going on
Sunday 6 October is UK Fungus Day, led by the British Mycological Society. This is the day for people who love fungi – from amateur enthusiasts to professional mycologists (fungi experts) – to spread the word about this wonderful world. We’ve rounded up some of the best events, including our own, for you to take part in.
Win a grow-your-own fungus lab, UK-wide
We have a small number of fungus labs left over from the campaign earlier this year. So it felt right to give people the opportunity to get up close and personal with the fungi kingdom this October. Answer the question correctly and you’ll be entered into a prize draw to win a grow-your-own fungus lab.
The Secret Life of Fungi, Ride My Bike Cafe in Cardiff - Tuesday 8 October
Grow Wild's very own Maria Golightly is holding an evening event all about fungi. Be prepared to be surprised, enlightened and perhaps even a little freaked out and you will definitely never look at your mushroom omelette in the same way again!
UK Fungus Day National Photographic Competition 2019
This year the 2019 digital photo competition is free to enter. The rules for entry are available on the competition website and the closing date for entries is 6th November 2019. First prize is £250, second is £150 and third is £100, and the winning images will be displayed on the UK Fungus Day and British Mycological Society website.
Bristol Fungus Day, Arnos Vale Cemetary - Saturday 5 October
Rich Wright, one of our favourite mycologists, is running a special event at Arnos Vale Cemetary packed with fantastic activities and workshops. There's also a great line up of speakers, including Professor Lynne Boddy talking about fungus wars and Professor Patricia Wiltshire talking about forensic mycology. It's free to attend so what are you waiting for?
Fungi festival and foray by Underfoot, Roath Pleasure Gardens Cardiff - Sunday 20 October
One of our funded youth projects this year are holding an event to celebrate the fungi kingdom: learn a little bit about these overlooked species, have a hot drink and tag along on one of their free forays around the area.
Fungi forays across the country!
